Lindstrøm "Another Station (Todd Terje Remix)"

PITCHFORKMEDIA.COM: Bassless for its first three minutes, this is like a Lindstrøm cool down-- heavy on space, with synth notes often lasting an entire measure and a striking electronic piano opening up the breakdowns. And even though he's slowing things down here, Lindstrøm stills moves us with his percussion, a careful mix of toms and machines.

Far better, however, is the the Terje remix, which kicks off with straight 4/4 bass drum and accompanying toms and synth. Then it really hits: Slick, conventional electric bass glides through the bars before Terje switches to analog, loops in Lindstrøm's croon, and fills whatever's left with cutups of the original's synths and piano-- and a shitload of cowbell.

Phoenix "Long Distance Call"

Jon Hassell "Voiceprint (808 State Mix)"

Composer/trumpeter Jon Hassell is the visionary creator of a style he describes as "fourth World," a mysterious, unique hybrid both ancient and digital, composed and improvised, Eastern and Western. 808 State are one of the pioneers of British acid house, making this 1990 release an intriguing collaboration that became a favorite amongst DJs. Unavailable for several years, this album demonstrates how collaborations, regardless of diversity of genres, can stand the test of time.

Neonman "Rich Kids (Warren Suicide Mix)"

VIRTUAL GUEST DJ: James Blunt

1. The Killers "Mr. Brightside"
A scorned lover turned voyeur vents to a synth-driven New Wave groove. "It captures something that has real grit, a real meaning. It's a welcome relief from that whole kind of prepackaged pop."

2. Gorillaz "Feel Good Inc."
Damon Albarn and Co.'s trip-hop hit, featuring a guest spot from De La Soul. "It's gone out on a limb, but at the same time it's captured people's imaginations and minds."

3. Hard-Fi "Cash Machine"
Twitchy guitars and a dubbed-out rhythm section fuel a tale of a broke dude trying to come up with the money to get his girlfriend an abortion. "They've written this song in a way that relates to an English way of life. It's got a certain angst to it, a certain frustration."

4. Prince "Let's Go Crazy"
Purple Rain's quintessential party anthem. "The last year or so, we've been putting that song on right before we go onstage. It gets you in the mood."

5. Cat Power "Maybe Not"
A haunting piano ballad from mope-rock queen Chan Marshall's 2003 album You Are Free. "I've always been really inspired by her. This song's nice and depressing. I listened to it when I got my record deal. No, not really."

Listen to the playlist.

Feist: Mushaboom (Postal Service remix) [iTunes exclusive]

CONTACTMUSIC.COM: Despite having a title that sounds like the plan for a student’s weekend it is in fact a spine tingling, piano sparkled and folk feeling offering from this quaint and clever Canadian songstress. Some people will listen to this number and think; “boy this voice sounds familiar” well, you might have heard it on Peaches infamous offering ‘Teaches of Peaches’, as Feist kindly loaned her larynx for the recording of it.

Her voice is tender and summery, standing out against the rustic and jangling instrumental accompaniment, whereby she tells the tale of a city slicker (she has lived in Calgary and Toronto) longing for the quiet life.

‘Mushaboom’ is a mature and thoughtful track, but most importantly it contains a sense of fun borne out in the instrumentals. This nifty number is taken from Feist’s underrated ‘Let It Die’ album that has been available for purchase in the UK since 12th July 2004. It is early days yet and there is evidently a great deal more to come from the classy Calgary born girl, but she possesses the emotion and musical ability to become a female Dashboard Confessional. This, of course, is in the sense that she seems keen to continue to plough a creative lone furrow in our ever increasing ‘do as you are told’ music industry.

The Juan Maclean: "Love Is in the Air (Mock and Toof Remix)" [MySpace stream coming soon]

PITCHFORKMEDIA.COM: London-based duo Mock and Toof run with the optimism of Maclean's flute-- some of the vocoder parts, too-- and forego the rest of the original's heavy disconnect. This track is now a banger, smacking with the sound of the moment-- electro-house in a vacuum, deep in tone, stretched and echoed out. The synth, visceral and heavy, kills any resistence to stagnation. Granted, there's palpable irony to Mock and Toof remixing Less Than Human's saddest song, but it's never debilitating. If anything, they reveal another purpose for the song: letting sad sacks work their frustrations out on the dancefloor.
